RD210: NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS
NEW COURSE! Offered in 2022 Term 4 beginning 18 October 2022, 1:30-3:30pm. Eight consecutive sessions per Term.
Location: Hamilton, or on-line distance learning.
This eight-week course, part of our Contemporary Issues in Religion series, covers a wide variety of what are typically titled “new religious movements” or NRMs, religious or spiritual movements often considered to be on the periphery of the world’s major faith and belief traditions. During this course, we’ll discuss the differences between denominations, sects and cults, and examine the extensive diversification of these ever-evolving new age, spiritual and pseudo-religious movements.
Weekly sessions include the topics:
- Week 1: Course Intro: Sects, Cults, Mainstream & New Age Movements
- Week 2: Christian: Brethren, Christadelphians, Unification Church, Branch Davidians, Opus Dei, Palmarian Catholic Church, etc.
- Week 3: Indian: TM, Eckankar, 3HO, Sant Mat, ISKCON, Meher Baba, Arya Samaj, Ananda Marga, Rajneesh, Muktananda, Adidam, etc.
- Week 4: Chinese & Japanese: Soka Gakkai, Falun Gong, Aum Shinrikyo, etc.
- Week 5: Neo & Black Judaism: Rastafarians, Nation of Yahweh, Commandment Keepers: Holy Church of the Living God, Messianic Judaism, etc.
- Week 6: Pagan: Wicca, Druids, Church of Satan, Satanism, Voodoo, Adonism, Church of All Worlds, Church of Aphrodite, etc.
- Week 7: UFO Religions: Scientology, Aetherius Society, Chen Tao, Heaven’s Gate, Raëlism, Unarius Academy of Science, Urantia Foundation, etc.
- Week 8: Parody Faiths: Pastafarians, Jediism, Church of the SubGenius, Dudeism, etc.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course, and each course in the series can be taken at any time and in any order.
Distance Learning: This course has distance-learning options for those unable to attend the live class sessions in Hamilton. Students have three options for attending our courses once they have registered:
- attend in-person classes in our Hamilton classrooms at the regularly scheduled day and time,
- attend our live on-line classroom sessions via Zoom at the regular scheduled day and time,
- watch the live-recorded class sessions at your leisure, at a time, day and place more suited to your schedule.
These options can be mixed and matched throughout the course to suit your own availability and location.
